Key vocabulary

chart

un graphique — used to show data visually (bars, lines, circles)

table

un tableau — organises data in rows and columns

diagram

un diagramme — shows percentages or comparisons

approximately

environ — used when a number is not exact

Useful phrases

• "The chart shows that..."
• "According to the table..."
• "The diagram indicates..."
• "Approximately a quarter of... / most of..."

Example

Bar chart: 60% walk, 25% bus, 15% car → "The chart shows that most students walk to school."

Trend words

• increased / rose → a augmenté / a monté
• fell → a chuté
• remained stable → est resté stable
• doubled → a doublé

Three possible answers

• True : the data confirms the statement (ex: "75%" matches "three out of four")
• False : the data contradicts the statement (ex: chart shows 50%, not 75%)
• Not given : the data doesn't mention the topic at all

Strategy

Underline the key number in the statement → find it in the chart → compare. Don't guess!

How to answer mixed questions

1. Read the question carefully — does it need text, data, or both?
2. Find the relevant sentence in the text.
3. Find the matching number in the chart or table.
4. Write your answer using both pieces of information.

Useful connector phrases

• "According to the text..."
• "The table shows that..."
• "Combined with the data..."

Example

Question: "Why did the school add more bus routes in 2022?" → Answer: "The school added more bus routes because student numbers grew — from 300 to 520 according to the table."

Tip

Always quote the exact number. Never write "a lot" — write "60%" or "more than half".
