Setting and Atmosphere
The setting = where + when the story takes place. It shapes the atmosphere (= mood) of the story.

Setting and Characters
The setting shapes the characters in three main ways.
Three Key Relationships
- Reflect
- The setting mirrors the character's emotions (pathetic fallacy = paysage état d'âme)
- Challenge
- The setting creates obstacles that force the character to grow
- Trap / Liberate
- The setting can prevent or allow a character to change and be free
Example
"John stood at the window. Outside, the sky was grey and heavy clouds gathered. He had just lost everything." → The stormy sky mirrors John's despair (pathetic fallacy).
Questions to ask
- Does the setting reflect the character's emotions?
- Does it challenge them and make them grow?
- Does it trap or liberate them?
